The culture that we live in these days is as far as it can be from spiritual aspects such as religion. The increasing usage and importance given to consumerism and materialism has made us numb to the temporary goods of life which we sometimes abuse so much so that we fall prey to drugs and alcohol and many other substances that can be harmful to us mentally and physically. There is no place for spirituality these days, but according to research, and for decades, spiritual teachings during rehab have been promising—they have shown real results much to everyone’s shock.
This all started in the mid-1930s when the first 12-step program was developed for drinking addiction. And due to its huge success, more 12-step programs were created. The 12-step programs were just 12 steps that helped the patient cope with their addiction through the methods of spirituality and trust in a higher being, or even being more inclined towards nature. This is all what spirituality really is and what is actually needed to heal a drug addict in their rehab treatment program.
One thing should be completely understood here is the fact that spirituality does not mean to be embraced by a religion entirely—it means to be nurtured, restored, and renewed as a human being through spiritual teachings, to believing in something other than yourself, to believe in a supernatural thing that can take all of your problems in way that makes you feel as if you are never alone.
There are a lot of things that spirituality has to tackle, it has to make you become a new person, it has to restore you to the way you used to be but better, and it has to nurture you. Because you have been going through a lot of trauma and hardships for several years. It is only logical to think that 5 years of depression, anxiety, trauma, and hardships can only logically need 5 years to recover from them, but this can happen sooner with the help of a spiritual program known as the 12-step program.
Therefore, here are the things that you have to do in order to be spiritually awakened in your rehab treatment program.
Check the things that you are happy about.
This is the thing that can make you more grounded, take off that anxiety in your head and throw it away. You just have to think of at least 5 things that you are truly grateful for and happy about daily.
Find time to connect spiritually each day.
It does not matter whom you think of as a spiritual source, it could be God, it could be your places of worships, it could be nature, it could be anything etc. You have to find time to connect with this spiritual source daily in order to incorporate this into your life.
Share your journey with another spiritual student.
This can keep you and your friend you make on each other’s toes. You can share everything regarding the new things you discover while figuring out your spirituality. This can help you increase your sense of self and belonging to a place that you didn’t know existed. Do call this friend of yours daily to discuss about topics and questions that you might have about each other’s spiritual journey.
Be good and do good to others.
The main goal of spiritualty is to give purpose and direction to the individual who was or is suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. Therefore, by keeping a mindset of serving others, you can live a new life that has purpose and direction. Furthermore, it will make you selfless as this is the true meaning of life.
