What to Eat After a Workout

Post-workout nutrition is just as important as the actual workout itself. When you exercise, your body goes through some minor trauma as you overwork your muscles. The harder the workout, the more damage your body accumulates.

After exercising, your body needs to recuperate in order to benefit from the workout. However, even recovering from an intense workout requires energy. If your body doesn’t have energy, you won’t reap the rewards of your exercise regime. To make sure you have enough energy for the recovery period, you need to eat the right kinds of food.

    Carbs

Carbohydrates provide your body with fuel. Carbohydrates fill up your body’s glucose reserves. Glucose gets converted into energy, and it’s what helps you feel energized throughout the day.

Without enough glucose in the body, you may feel like your post-workout fatigue extends throughout the entire day. You may have trouble moving and lifting your arms. Lying in bed becomes a lot more appealing than other productive activities.

Eat something rich in carbs to regain that energy. Of course, you don’t want to undo all your hard work on the treadmill, so stick with something light that has little calories, like eggs and nuts.

    Protein

Remember those micro-tears on your muscles we were talking about? Well, protein creates the amino acids needed to repair them. Without protein, you won’t be able to build muscles the way you want. You’ll have trouble gaining larger muscles or achieving muscle definition.

Protein-rich foods like lean meats and poultry are consumed regularly by people that want to focus on their muscle definition. For vegetarians, seitan and tofu are great sources of protein too.

    Dairy

Dairy products contain a lot of nutrients that keep your body and mind strong and sharp. Calcium, vitamin D, and proteins can all be found in various dairy products.

Dairy aids in bone development and strength. If you are doing high impact workouts, then you need to keep your bones safe. Hairline fractures are common when doing intense sports, so fortification with dairy products is a must.

You need to be very careful with the kind of milk you consume. Whole milk contains a lot of nutrients, it also contains a lot of fat. Consuming fat isn’t the end of the world, but it’s very easy to consume too much of it when drinking a lot of milk.

    Liquids

Sweating depletes the water in our bodies. Stay hydrated with either normal water or electrolyte water. Frequent dehydration can cause kidney problems and extreme fatigue.

Electrolyte water is especially good for those that feel themselves get too dizzy after working out. It could be a sign of an electrolyte imbalance, so having electrolyte water comes in handy.
